the integration of sample/chop is something i didn't think i'd see. pumped about the return of the non-destructive chop. whoo.

    - Revamped Sample Lab/Chop Lab. Now everything can be taylored within the same interface.
Looking forward to this, hopefully with loop function for the individual chops

    THX GUYS!

Sorry if this has been asked elsewhere, but when is the expected release?
  • edited 10:28PM
very happy with this feature list and its timeliness.

does midi out mean that beatmaker can send clock too?
i hope this gets implemented well so one can sequence external hardware.

this would indeed be a big deal.

    great job guys

    cheers

    Hi,

As we're heading to the release of the 2.2 update, we wanted to share the list of included new features:

    - MIDI Out, Thru and MIDI-over-WiFi support
(i can see this being useful...i guess)
    - Virtual MIDI inputs/outputs
(...not something i use, but once again useful to some)
    - MIDI Hotplug
    (wth...?)
    - DropBox file sharing support
(what can we share? The songfiles and samples if so its a start!) WOOHoO
    - Revamped Sample Lab/Chop Lab. Now everything can be taylored within the same interface.
(So i dont have to edit the samp,e in one and then go to the other? Cool)
    - Non-destructive chopping options
    (good thing)
    - Customize sample bounds per pad
(not sure what your doing here? So i guess, will see)
    - Export song to individual audio tracks
(oh goodness! Really? Yessssssss I Love you!)(stems!!)
    - Added amount multiplier and invert ADSR options
    (again ?)
    - Support for Apple Loops slice points (reading & writing).
(Do i have to use a stinking ftp to get them in?)( or will the dropbox function work?)
    - Korg's WIST support (synchronizes supported music apps playback).
(i can see us using this here, good add)
    - Other general improvements and iOS 5 related fixes
(finally i can go to ios5)
man, if we got stems i am happy especially if they dropbox !!!

    Non-Destructive Chopping is good!!!
  • edited 10:28PM
This is getting better and better!!

My guess about "Customize sample bounds per pad" means being able to set start and end points of a sample of a pad, as a possible extension of non-destructive chopping. Would be cool to be able to have several pads "link" to just one sample and then be able to set different ranges for each pad.

Aside from saving memory on not having multiple samples on backups, it could lead to experiments such as mapping the same one or two samples across several drum pads/keys, and using sample bounds along with all the other sound-shaping tools to create entire drum kits/sound sets.

Of course, this is all guessing. I hope Intua details this feature for us soon (along with the others).

    Non-destructive chop! WOOO!
    Dropbox support! WOOO!
    Export to individual tracks! WOOO!

    Hi,

    Some clarifications:

    - Yes, BM 2.2 will send MIDI clock information too
    - Custom samples bounds will also be useful to map the same sample to different pads, while having different start/end play positions for each of them (non-destructive chopping)
    - We're also adding another much requested feature: dynamic swing (groove) on patterns. (non-destructive quantize)

    Cheers,
    Colin

    Love the new page design!
    Nice!

Oh I cant wait for the update!

I really dont see any other really necessary improvements if all runs bug free

    My suggestions would be...
    sell me better effects units
Sell me an instrument or two (something over the top)
    Sell me sound libraries
    Give me some audio tracks

Copy and paste between apps kinda makes the first 2 less important
Making your own sounds is better than buying patches
That last one would be the best of the four...

    thanks alot colin!

this is great news. midi clock - fantastic.
many, many thanks to the developers.

i would not mind paying for stuff so inapp shop is welcome.
  • I hope a revision to the manual is coming the same time as the update. This way we will know how to use all of these wicked new features!

I know this isnt a total fix but i do vocals in bm2 all the time via pads...

Yeah I'm already doing that, but it's definitely just a work around. With audio tracks BM2 would be a real DAWs killer!!!
  • edited 10:28PM
Doing vocals with pads could be a better option with the upcoming sample bounds feature if you're looking to create some vocal stutter effects. You wouldn't need to copy and chop a copy of the vocal. You could even take two versions of the same sample and effect them differently to create a doubling effect for a chorus.

    Hi everybody,
I was just about to post about midi out and other things I would like to see in BeatMaker!
What can I say! With your graphic interface and your midi and wave editor, BeatMaker is going to be the best app around, in my humble opinion. I just can't wait! Please don't change the midi editing and the graphic <!-- s:D --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_e_biggrin.gif" alt=":D" title="Very Happy" /><!-- s:D -->
    Regards.

Sample bounds is a amazing! Intua just took it to another level.

    Hi there,

Is the upgrade free for existing Beatmaker 1 users or is this just another app that 's been coined Beatmaker 2?

    regards,

    Dubcotics

If you read up on BM2 you'll see it is absolutely a v2 product. There have been massive changes. It's not just a resolution upgrade like many iPad apps..

I think the app store and all of its free apps (btw if its free you're the product) has caused people to forget that the developers still have to make money as well. Coding, troubleshooting and running a business is extremely costly.

20 bucks! Hell I've owned legendary hardware (mc505, mpc40, RM1x) that couldn't do half of the things this software does.. And that cost me at least 3k.

Not to say I don't have my own suggestions but its clear these guys spent a lot of time on this app and they deserve to be compensated (or at least cut their losses). Hopefully this will be lucrative enough for them that they continue refine and expand it..

Can someone please explain to me what the upcoming Virtual midi will allow me to do as it relates to other iOS apps...or will this only apply to hardware synths?

Can someone please explain to me what the upcoming Virtual midi will allow me to do as it relates to other iOS apps...or will this only apply to hardware synths?

If an iOS synth supports Virtual MIDI (VM) like Sunrizer and some others, you will be able to sequence them with BM2. BUT...... you still have to record the synth in it's own app, and copy/paste to BM2.

This is better because as it is not you can't sequence an iOS synth on BM2's piano roll.

It's not perfect, but a big step in the right direction.

    Follow this link <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.idesignsound.com/apps/ios-audio/apps-that-support/apps-that-support-virtual-midi/">http://www.idesignsound.com/apps/ios-au ... tual-midi/</a><!-- m --> to view the apps that currently support VM.

    Thanks for the response;

I understand you can sequence the external app but you still have to RECORD the sequence in the external app. That's pretty much how it works in the hardware world w/an mpc and keyboard and a DAW, so no big deal. This all sounds good, but...how will u sequence...in other words, will you be in BM2 and hit record, then jump back to the other app and play?...or will you hear the other apps sounds when you hit BM2's pads, keys?..if it's the latter, that will be CRAZY! ...hope this makes sense...

We are very early on in the development of mobile music production. Think about this way we are shoehorning 30+ years of music technology on to a platform developed to be a phone. <!-- s:o --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_e_surprised.gif" alt=":o" title="Surprised" /><!-- s:o --> There are no agreed on standards standards like MIDI, spidf, clock, etc.

This platform provides a whole new set of problems that technology and standards have to be developed to solve. Virtual midi is one of the first steps down that path, eventually someone will come out with a rewire like solution to pass audio and perhaps a plugin system (like vst) or something newer to allow for hosted 3rd party apps (synths, fx, etc).

Complicating things is that Apple doesn't allow developers to do a lot of the things they need to solve these issues. In fact Apps were spefically designed to be isolated from each other, the Lower level functionality of the OS is also isolated from the apps.

The early days of midi, digital, virtual were all painfully difficult to work in but the benefits that the new technology made it worth it. It will be some years before workflow is going to be as smooth as what we see in the Major DAWs. But the power of a more complex user interface (multitouch, gyro, tilt, camera, etc), portability and flexibility are just to useful to ignore.

    Welcome to the beginning of the next stage of music technology. One day you'll be telling someone how painfully difficult it was to work on music in the early days of mobile computing. <!-- s8-) --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_cool.gif" alt="8-)" title="Cool" /><!-- s8-) --> <!-- s:lol: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_lol.gif" alt=":lol:" title="Laughing" /><!-- s:lol: --> <!-- s:mrgreen: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_mrgreen.gif" alt=":mrgreen:" title="Mr. Green" /><!-- s:mrgreen: -->

Apple already integrated the audio trasporting mecanism and the plugins part:

Sysex messages to transport wave info.... The OMAC group is pretty much getting consensus on how to standarize it's use between developers right now.

AU plugins have been added since ios5 came along... But nobody has used them though....

I agree... Sandboxing is a bitch... But everything will end up sandboxed in the future... Even microsoft wants to implement it.... And off course mac gets sandboxed early next year... Creativity will find it's way out of the problem of inter-app communication this creates.

I'm really happy to hear that Apple has done so much to help Improve mobile audio. That is excellent news for the audio community. <!-- s:D --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_e_biggrin.gif" alt=":D" title="Very Happy" /><!-- s:D -->

From my experience you have to take a wait and see approach. There've been countless standards that are tried and failed or never truly gained any real traction (DirectX plugins, MOTU MAS, MLAN, HD-MIDI, etc). Even though a heavy weight is behind the spec and standard doesn't mean it will take hold. I'd love to say it's the best technology that wins out but mostly it's the technology of the most popular platform that wins out.

I wonder if AU is going to be the right technology for mobile or if something really needs to be written from the ground up. Though it's been updated massively over the years it was still designed for a totally different HW architecture.

There no way to know now how this will all shake out, but I do know this. Mobile audio tech is developing at a speed that I've never seen before. In just a few short years we've gone from Basic sample playback to one of the most creative and innovative synths I've seen in a very long time (sorry to be a Moog fanboy but AniMoog is astounding). 2 years from now we might have the next big DAW that is even more innovative then Cubase VST or Ableton were when they hit the market.

We're getting there rather quickly but we still have a long way to go. Having seen 3 major transitions myself, I'd have to say I think this one is the most exciting. I can't wait to see how it cross pollinates with more powerful studio technology. It's already making it's way in to the latest versions of Windows and OSX
