Can I open old Outlook Express DBX emails in Outlook 365?

My old DBX email files are saved on my computer, but I cannot open them in my current mail setup. I need to know how these files can be changed into a supported format so I can view the old messages again.

  • Yes, you can open old Outlook Express DBX emails in Outlook 365 but you can’t do this by double clicking on the DBX files. Outlook 365 does not directly import DBX mailboxes. You will need to convert DBX to PST first. Then open the PST in the Outlook desktop app that is connected to Microsoft 365.

One thing to note: Outlook on the web will not import DBX or PST directly. The PST needs to be added through the desktop Outlook application.

Before starting, copy your DBX files to a separate folder and keep the original backup safe. Old files like Inbox.dbx, Sent Items.dbx and custom folders may contain important emails, so avoid renaming or editing them.

When only the old DBX backup is left, GainTools DBX to PST Converter Software provides a proper bridge from Outlook Express mailboxes to the Outlook 365 ready PST format. You can preview emails, save the PST locally, and check folders, dates, and attachments before using the software.

A sensible, safe step is to test the free demo first with 10 emails from each DBX folder, then open the sample PST in Outlook and verify the result.
