What is the easiest way to understand a new project?

Sometimes I find a project online that sounds interesting, but after opening it I realise that I do not really understand what I am looking at. There may be several folders, technical terms and files that mean very little to someone who is simply trying to learn more about the project. I recently came across github.com/Aviator-prediction and decided to take a slower approach instead of immediately trying to use anything from it. I started with the main description, then looked at the README and the general structure of the repository. I think this is especially useful when searching for aviator predictor github information because different pages can describe similar projects in completely different ways. I would also check whether the repository has recent activity and whether the documentation explains what each component is supposed to do. That gives you a much clearer picture before you spend time on the technical details.
