Hey all,

I am as excited for this update as ya'll.. but as a developer who has worked on music apps.. cut Intua some slack. What they did is not easy.. and there have been known issues with the 2.2 iphone update with audio, so maybe they are dealing with that now to ensure we don't get a buggy app against v2.2 iphone audio changes. I am anxious as well and check my iphone appstore button several times a day... mostly because I want to know the "and many other" features.. they didn't say we get more pads/voices.. so hoping that is a hidden surprise. Even so, I don't think Intua is being secretive.. they said an update is coming soon, I believe them. We all know this is a kick ass app, we know the update is going to bring us lots more goodies.. so relax... let Intua get it done and we'll all be the happier.

Not really a matter of cutting slack, we're all extremely excited to try the new features and want a general idea of the ETA. Has it been submitted, are there issues with 2.2, etc... It's been a couple months since the last update, so naturally everyone is curious.

While I agree with andjarnic and I think Intua are doing a great job, a line or two from them, keeping us users in the loop can't be that time consuming/difficult surely?
This is a discussion forum not a magical mystery tour in fairness.
It shouldn't be a big deal to keep the community in the loop.
I know the app is a large one, possibly making it more difficult for Apple to approve.. and there are the audio issues with 2.2FW, but unless Intua say thats the hold up (which is fine btw!) then its just speculation on our part with no word from developers.
• Hello,

Our apologies, we found out some late issues which have been delaying the release for longer than we thought. Firmware 2.2 availability also involved more testing and fixes.
Perhaps making the announcement without a release date was a mistake, we only wanted to give you more news about the project and let you know we had been busy working hard on BeatMaker the past months

We will let you know once we have submitted the update to Apple.

Cheers,
The Intua Team

intua, thx for the update. We appreciate the hard work and can't wait to see what's in store for us.

Great news! Look forward to the update. Hoping you guys will list the rest of the features soon if this update is going to take another few days or longer to get to us.

Thanks for the update intua.

Back to where we started..... I'm hoping that wasn't "developer" talk for, " you won't see this till 2009". All I want is to be able to record more then 1 bar~ grrrrrrrr!
• edited 2:32PM
Or you can have them push it out now.. and then when issues crop up.. wait 3+ months for an update.. I'd rather wait a week or two (or longer) and have a solid update. Hell.. if they can squeeze in more pads per song or a bank feature if its not already in there..I'd rather wait a month! I'll keep whining about this till its in dangit! lol. Just dying to have more than 16 sounds to play with.. at least 32, but 64 or even 128 would be great. Let me use that 8GB of memory (or 16).
• edited 2:32PM
The biggest problem with adding more banks is the increased latency it causes with the application. The iphone was not made to be an audio production tool. If you haven't noticed or researched most mobile music appz are limited to 16 simultaneous sounds for resource reasons ( griff, psp rhythm. bahjas loops, AudioBox etc etc ). Being able to take a pad then put it into piano roll should easily be enough for most people. Make the sequence, if need be resample, and go about your business. If you're using a phone for music production you're going to have make some compromises. If you 'need' more banks go buy an Asus EEE for sub $200; run reason, live, fruitlyloops, NI Kore, and you'll be set. Not to mention you can hook up a USB audio interface for increased productivity. Even better, track out your sequences into a DAW or multitrack recorder. It's been that way for years..... And yes, sometimes I'd rather them rush out an update so we can let them know what to work on. Who cares if they spend months working on something that doesn't fit the needs of the users. It's not like beatmaker is perfect right now. Any update will be better then what's available. Regardless, people are going to keep giving them money through the app store without an update. The 'users' are the only ones that can push the devs and let them know what's needed and what to correct.

Lastly, lets not forget what Intua is not letting us know. There are plans for other iphone appz to have direct Beatpack integration; ie Noise.IO. Being able to import non sampled sounds will be a big benefit and not to mention will be able to free up some pads we'd normally use for melodies. Ironically enough I hate being pessimistic; Intua give us something good to talk about

@formal,

Actually..I wasn't referring to having more pads to use in a sequence (more sounds available), not to play more sounds simultaneously.. I just wanted to have more sounds available for a single song. I am fine with 16 sounds.. although to be technical, the addition of more sounds playing back at once in a sequence is just a matter of summing (adding) more sounds. I am curious what the polyphony of this app is and what level of math they use for combining the sounds. Having written a mixer app back in the mod-tracker days, I understand the more you mix the more cpu you need.. and potentially the headroom can cause distortion if too many sounds exceed the bit-depth being used to sum the sounds. That said.. playing 16 pads at once is impossible. You can only multi-touch 5 pads at once anyway.. so in the case of playing the pads.. you're limited to 5 sounds at once anyway.. which is the iphone itself, not the beatmaker app. Quite frankly, if the iphone internals allow for a 32-bit integer math, there is no reason you can't sum up 16, 32 or even 64 sounds at once. Let's be clear.. on my 386 computer with a 66Mhz cpu years and years ago, I could play 32 or even 64 sounds at once. Being that the cpu in the iphone is much more powerful than that of my computer way back then.. I am guessing it can handle mixing 32 sounds at once. But again.. I am not nearly as worried about the total sounds as that of just having more sounds to use in a song. However, your comment brings up an interesting issue.. if they did add a bank or few of pads to use in a song.. and you try to use more than the total voices that can be played.. what gets clipped? Since each sample on a pad could play for any number of seconds.. there isnt any programatic way to ensure that you don't use more sounds that it can handle.. so something either gets clipped.. probably the samples that are still playing.. that is new notes trump older/longer notes playing. That could work.. and the user just has to listen to the song and hear when samples are being cut short because some new sounds are starting up.

Oh well.. I am sure it will be great no matter what. But mind you.. there are many on this forum, and as I subscribe to several music mags (computer music, future music, mix, etc), a lot of them put the iphone up there with gear to look out for in music creation. There certainly isn't any reason the beatmaker app couldn't be used in place of computer software to produce driving beats and basslines, then imported in (via the midi or audio export feature). Thus.. it certainly can be used for production/professional work.

No, I don't think it was a mistake, but since you recently announced the update being a day away from being sent to Apple people were wondering what happened.
It only shows our interest in your product.
• Hello,

Due to technical issues on Apple side since yesterday, we are having difficulties uploading the final BeatMaker 1.3 update on the App Store.
We are trying by all means to get the situation resolved as soon as possible.

Thank you for your patience,
Intua Team

...Been sent to apple, but when will apple actually make it available for downloading?
Hopefully this isn't just another tease. I just checked for updates and there is nothing for beatmaker (still).
I guess I'll have to wait until tomorrow, again...

Good news Intua,
I'm sure ye were working flat out scrambling to get the fw issues resolved. I just hope Apple don't take the p1ss with the testing.
Thanks for keeping us in the loop.

I've read on other app developer forums that apple can take between 7 and 14 days for testing

Sweet.. just in time for Christmas! lol.. God I hope it doesn't take that long. Ever since the announcement I've been checking my dang phone every day several times.

Thanks for the update on the update. I feel kind of bad being part of the heavy pressure thing. But like some one said, it's all because we love your app and the update does sound almost too good to be true.
Again, many thanks and well done.
