For the next update

edited December 2008 in General
I would like to see a type of piano roll with actual instruments for the next update.

MORE SOUNDS!! Update is fantastic.. but we need more than 16 sounds per sequence.. 32 at the very least, if not more. Hopefully we wont wait too long to be able to have more than 16 sounds. I cut up 47 riffs (vocals, beats, synths, bass, etc) ready for this update..and cant use it. <!-- s:( --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_e_sad.gif" alt=":(" title="Sad" /><!-- s:( --> We really need to have some sort of sound bank option.. don't put more than the 16 pads on the pad screen.. but have somewhere a bank option to switch banks. This would be huge for this app!

Would also be great to see 16/24 bit output options for export wav, and more use of the wifi network capability to upload/download sounds/songs/banks. Have barely messed with 1.3, but I save the recorded sound.. can I send it to my PC with a song? Not sure yet if that part is possible.

This is becoming a great live tool! More sounds is definitely needed for some serious live stuff, however not sure the iphone memory can handle it, the samples need to be in RAM if you want them to react instantly when hitting the pad so there is limited hardware, but maybe its possible!

Anyways for live, Id like to see a midi sync capability, I know others talked about using it to control midi, and that too would be great... but with midi sync alone, I could setup two iphones or itouch and then have 32 banks all at my hands while being synced up, also would work if you integrated with Ableton etc. The midi sync would at least give many possible workarounds and new configurations, make it a legit live tool also for dj's, could replace things like kaos pad to help produce sounds, and LOTS of noise. I spend about an hour just making noise with the delays/bitcrusher and pitch shift last night... I made some ungodly sounds and it made me want to buy an itouch just to embed into some equipment and circuit bending to have the ultimate instrument! If midi sync was available, I would get two itouch's, seat them in some sort of case, add a few ins and outs, maybe a dbeam and a slider and Ill have the ultimate noise maker! (check out the "korg nano" if you want cheap midi stuff to tear apart)

So while there is no rush, here are some ideas:

    1) midi time sync so it can integrate with a full rig and no need to code all the midi capability and mapping "yet"

    2) Add midi mapping and ability to control instruments or be controlled by midi instruments

    and finally

    3) Realtime effects on realtime input! So instead of just sampling the input into pads, actually apply the bitcrusher, delay etc. to the input signal in realtime. Then you could change your voice, add distortion etc to the input. This would be great to allow us to have direct inputs of things like guitar, or possibly some other beat program, then use the beatmaker program like a kaospad or other filters. Realtime would allow us to put one iphone into the other also, and we can use two of them without the midi sync if we had to.

Cant say how amazed I am with this update though, WELL worth the wait. Thanks!

Can I add something not for the next update, but for the update after that? Jeeez
  • I JUST NEED One thing the ability to play the pads in different modes not just a one Shot why haven't you Guys done that ? I would like to press the pad then let go then the sample will stop just like an mpc. So i can play sounds more like a keyboard

I don't know for sure.. but when you put a sound in a sequencer/pattern.. can you put the same sound right after it and set its velocity to 0... so that it "cuts out" the first sound? I am not quite sure how the mixing section works. I would love if Intua would explain how sound mixing happens, what level of bits are used (24-bit, 32-bit), how distortion of mixed sounds is handled, and how many sounds can play at one time in a song/sequencer. I mean, if I stack 10 sounds in one pattern, 8 sounds in another, 13 in another.. and put all 3 at the same time.. how many actually play? What's the order of what gets cut first when too many sounds are playing. These sorts of things would help some of us figure out how best to use BeatMaker for song production. I know on my PC, Reason, Ableton Live.. as many sounds as my computer can handle will play/be mixed. I would like to know the details of this from Intua regarding BeatMaker.

Hey, just trying to make this product the best it can be. As of now im enjoying it to the fullest. I <3 this app.

It would be great if you could automate the XY pad. I suppose that's the same as the midi implementation...or is there an easier way?
I also wonder if stretching and shrinking audio is possible.

oops! I should read the manual again.....sorry!

Absolutely - until this feature is implemented, Beatmaker is just a toy to me. 1.3 is a great update, but I can't see myself feeling any more inspired to use it when it still suffers from this limitation.

Well, it's not YOU who is trying to make this product the best it can be, but Intua.
We all know what is the ultimate Beatmaker goal, to be able to do everything, to support 10 virtual synths, to have 128 pads etc and to serve as a bank point when we run out of cash.
It would be more useful for all of us if we concentrate on what we have at the moment, see if there are any glitches or other errors we can report and let Intua have well deserved holiday.
After all, when you work hard on something what you like to hear after you're done is some praise...not...' can it have this'..'why it doesn't have that'.
It'd be better you write to Apple and ask them to work on the audio engine because that's where the flaw is.

    4) thought of another thing I forgot, that is the ability to import MIDI, currently we can export midi score, but not import the file back that I am aware of. Seems we can import only the wav's that are exported. Would be cool to allow MIDI files to be imported for new grooves and rhythms.

Zakk - Intua has mentioned how appreciative they are of the feedback, in fact they thanked that other guy for complaining about the groove editor missing and mentioned it may even be back in the next update! How is that for service? Intua is great, and they are a company and a team, they surely love the feedback and it has already helped make the program the best it could be! If you dont give feedback of new things you want, or things that are missing, it will be up to that small team of individuals and their own history of making music, to determine the best features. Since everyone is different and has different techniques (as seen with the groove editor) it is vital that the community gets feedback to them about new features they want etc. A forum post is not like bombarding them with emails, they will read this thread when they are good and ready to get the tips. I doubt they would as a company or team of programmers, be upset that we have further ideas for features or complaints about existing features. I personally being a programmer would welcome them! Often my biggest hurdle is lack of feedback! The community here giving so much feedback is the fuel for the developers and thats why this program is firing on all cylinders in my opinion. Dont be afraid to speak your mind or voice concerns or ideas. Worst case, they will ignore them if they are not interested, I doubt any of them will lose sleep over even the worst of complainers. Its part of the job. Its important to be courteous though, just as it should be when your around ANYONE or ANYTHING! The great thing is the developers and the users have the same goal at this time, to make the ultimate program. When companies get large like microsoft it becomes a goal to "release an update by this time" and "make the shareholders happy" which means buggy updates , missing features, and not enough time for any REAL new features as bad code is being 'patched" fighting fires until release date... Separation between developers and users... We should take advantage while we has such good ties and feedback from the developers... someday it may be a meeting of the big wigs who decide the features to be implemented, right now it seems to be based on user feedback! Which is amazing and the most successful model you can get for making a great program!

All that being said, each time I come to this forum, I am even more impressed with the product... last night I re-created a song for my girlfriend to sing over (Texas - In Demand) using just the built in kits.. .I was able to even get the drums and bassline sounding very very close by using the tuning fork and pitch shifter. Would have taken me much longer on the PC than the iphone, amazing.

With midi import/export I would be able to export as midi, fine tune on the PC, and then upload back on the phone... Could download cover songs in midi etc, or import all the grooves from lik e"drumkit from hell". However with this latest update, I barely have the need to use any other program since beatmaker has all the bells and whistles I need!

I'm not in a particular hurry for this as there is enough in 1.3 to keep me happy for a while, but why let that stop me from spouting off?

In 1.3 they have added some really nice real-time control with the x-y pad. I would like to see this idea expanded to make it more of a live performance tool. First I would say put in multiple x-y pads, perhaps 1, 2 or 4 based on user choice (the little version of the pad is still useful, which is why I think 4 pads is feasible). Then I would say add something that allows more of a performance aspect to the sequencer. I'm not sure exactly what would be best, but perhaps you could divide the sequence into zones and allow the users to select which zone is playing from a performance screen. It would be possible to have a set of buttons on one side and the x-y pads on the other side and provide a lot of real-time control from one screen.

I also like the idea of providing access to more sounds at once, though this needs some thought to make it clean. I wouldn't want each pattern to suddenly have 32 rows.

I love the concept of the step editors (pan, pitch, velocity, and the hopefully-soon-restored groove). There is still stuff that could be exploited in this area, for instance effect send levels, filters, etc.).
