There aren't any free ones out there are there? If not then what's good for a lower-cost? I'm not interested in pirated warez. Only legit stuff please.
Personally I use Cakewalk Project5 and I like it a lot. It is very easy to work with. Very simple for setting up VSTi synths, device chains, etc. It is very good for MIDI sequencing and fine for audio. It's not clear if Cakewalk is going to do any more development on it (some would say it IS clear but I am holding out hope).
I am not actually a Reaper user but I have played with it a bit. It is very full-featured for its price. It came a bit more from the audio side (as opposed to MIDI/VSTi) but it does both for sure.
I used to like Fruity Loops and Tracktion, but for the last two years Energy XT has been my only VST host/sequencer.
Priced at 49 euros (about $65 I suppose), and the license not limited in any way.
The flexible modularity beats all the other programs hands down. It is not pretty, but power tools seldom are.

IMO, the old version 1.4 is a lot better than the newer 2.x, but that is only available for Windows.
Yea I started using reaper [reaper.fm] because it was not expensive, free to try all features. It grew on me, I registered that cost not much either. I think the dude started reaper had also started winamp back in the day, so I hear. I figured that was good enough for me. That said, it can be complicated, but so can any DAW. Oh yea, I'm was sick of thrashing my system with huge apps which lots of DAWs are, Reaper's small size (3.5 meg total) is a plus. It includes all kinds of VSTs with it (EQ, comp, etc) but they don't have lots of presets. Try it, you can always uninstall it, only 3.5 meg it doesn't leave any crap behind if you don't like it. Otherwise, I dunno how much FL (fruity loops) costs but I looks to have lots of good stuff said about it.
Hmm, I did not hear of reaper before, so I started testing it today. And so far, I am very impressed!
I suspect that in 30 days, I will send them some money to support their development. I really enjoy working with Reaper and so far, everything I used to do in other DAWs works as well if not better in Reaper.

I am not a professional but I have worked with Cubase before and found that Acid has enough functionality for me.
