Amazing app. For 20 bucks and the limited computing resources of the device, it's pretty fun.
After just an hour with it... my wish list:
- keyboard/roll editor
- any functionality that makes it easy to get a song idea composed. Make it the ultimate whenever, wherever "scratch pad" for song ideas. Right now it's only good for beats (hence the name, I suppose), but at the same time, all the kits I've tried so far only have a handful of percussion elements - they're all full of guitar riffs and pads and bass notes, etc - stuff that's useless for composing beats.
- And this might be a totally separate app, but it would be cool to be able to use the iPhone/iPod Touch as a control surface for GarageBand; with the ability to utilize the accelerometers (or an area of the touch surface) for "expression", like vibrato, flange, wah, etc. I've seen one for jailbroken iPhones, so I'm sure it's just a matter of time. Currently I can't find anything like this in the App Store.
elastic timestretching is a big one for me as it is one of the main features that I use on FL studio. being able to stretch a sample to 1/4 note or 1/2 note, whatever I need. another thing is sample cutoffs so that samples can be designated to cut off other samples so they dont play over each other.
being able to rename pads after you put 'sqncs' in them... makes things easier when making a track... ; i.e. instead of pad1, pad2, you could rename them to drums:main beat, sythn sample... a lot easier tracking
if you add any synths, then a keyboard would be a must..
if there is enuff memory on the iphone/itouch... how about the ability to load misc samples into a folder, that way you can pick a choose ones that would work with your track rather than having to make them in beatpaker before you load the app... or better yet, have folder in the beatpaker 'folder' marked for samples that you can load up to beatmakr on the fly when you want to try out new sounds..
Mine is:
VIRTUAL KEYBOARD (so that we can play melodies and edit them with a piano roll)
others that you may want to choose from:
Reverb
Choir
Flanger
Triplets!
I have to bring this to the forefront again. Being able to sequence MIDI notes
is the one thing that is missing from this app that would make it perfect. What I really
need is something that lets me record melodic ideas on the go. But overall Beatmaker is
an incredible step forward. I can not wait to see what the next version will bring.
First off this application is amazing. Cheers on that.
As has been mentioned, I think the greatest improvement would be a MIDI sequencing/built in sound module combination. If that is too far fetched as of now it would be nice to see the ability to load a couple of different kits at once. I don't know if that is part of that whole "physical limitation" thing but it would be really handy. Then at least you could have some piano/synth/bass/etc patches made up (Sort of like the default kits on the new MPCs.), and just throw them over a drum beat you have already made.
It would also be nice to have amplitude (and maybe even filter) envelopes for each pad, and filters for each pad.
Automation of basic paramaters would be cool (Volume, Pan, Etc.)
A pretty easy to add one would be TAP TEMPO to set the sequencer tempo.
Rex file support would be nice, in two ways. FIrst a "patched phrase" style loop like the MPCs or current DAWs to where when you speed up the sequencer file, and the rex speeds up. Second would be taking a rex file and placing a slice on each pad.
I could go on for a long time but I think the most essential thing is a sound module of some sort, or the ability to load multiple kits at once.
This one way be may out there but, REWIRE SUPPORT OVER WI-FI. Ooooh man that would be nice, and then to take it further and be able to assign each pad to its own rewire channel so that you can multi track your beat as audio in one pass!
Since we are dreaming here I'll take it one step further and suggest VST and/or/RTAS and/or AU SUPPORT OVER WI-FI. This would be like rewire but to a whole new level.
I think I'll stop now....
Congratulations again on a great product, I hope you make a million dollars.

Virtual Keyboard (maybe a sinth or piano kit) for playing around is the way... <!-- s:ugeek: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_e_ugeek.gif" alt=":ugeek:" title="Uber Geek" /><!-- s:ugeek: -->
A copy button when you are assigning samples would be great, similar to the roland "clip board" style.
This would allow you to hit a pad, hit the copy button, then tap the destination cell where you want it to be copied.
I said one more but I lied.
And maybe a way to not have it reset when you go back to the home screen or receive a phone call.
How about a function that allows you to export each track or pattern as a wave file? As of now you just have to order them sequentially, bounce the entire file, then chop it later (Which works but that feature would be nice to have.)
I'm sure I'll be back with more as I think of them...
the best thing about this app is the interface design - intuitive, simple, easy to use.
i know people are clamoring for more features and billions of effects, but i hope that Intua knows better.
you need a very clean interface to be usable on an iPhone and you need to pick your tools well, because the phone can't handle much.
i'm hoping some way of recording melodies off one sound sample comes in, rather than the 8 sounds for an octave range filling up half the pads.
but if it happens, it has to be done in a way that's fitting with the awesome design now - 'm more motivated to use this sequencer than any physical or computer one i've owned, because it's free of complication - it's all about making music!
\
i'm hoping some way of recording melodies off one sound sample comes in, rather than the 8 sounds for an octave range filling up half the pads.
I would say make it function like the 16 levels on an MPC where you can transpose the note to all the pads temporarily to program melodies, but it still only takes up one pad.

YEAH, that would be awesome - although personally I'd prefer a keyboard but an MPC mode would definitely rock too.

yeah virtual instruments work this way too i think, hence the keyboard idea people are suggesting. thing is that's a lot of instant processing for a small computer (iPhone) to be doing. but it really is essential.
perhaps a virtual instrument could be loaded, separate to the pads? like another feature, after the beats | sequencer | fx screens....
i hope this is resolved osmehow, the software is very limited for songwriting until then.
Be able to transpose the pitch of a pad, just like on an MPC.
You select one of the 16 pads. Say a piano note that you assigned to the pad.
Then you would hit a "transpose" button.
Now the selected piano sample would be assigned to all 16 pads, each pad playing a different pitch of the piano note ( There could be a few pads pitching the sound up and a few pitching the sound down ). This way, we could create melodies ( piano, bass ) using only one pad, and still have 15 other open pads...
The ability to erase pads while in record mode (I.E) Holding clear and the pad simultaneously will erase the event according to how long you hold them down. <!-- s --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_cry.gif" alt="" title="Crying or Very Sad" /><!-- s -->
1. Pitching feature / Keyboard / Piano roll - (any feature that will make it easy to play melodies) I think some combination of a piano keyboard that temporarily pops up to be used to play melodies and "pitch slider in the sequencer window" feature would pretty much do the trick.
2. A feature that would make bars longer and with higher resolution etc...... as previously discussed in this thread, there could be resolutions up to 32nds and 64ths, potentially extended over a 2 to 4 bar loop as opposed to 1 bar loop
3. More effects. As previously discussed, Filters, Verbs etc..... all the fundamental FX would be great. FX automation would be a huge plus!
4. Copy and pasting of samples from one cell to another.
5. Muting through voice groups - essential for simulating Open hat / closed hat, hi hat patterns. Could also be useful in controlling the length of samples.
6. A feature that could play a note in "one shot toggle mode" or in a kind of "gate mode" where there is some way for the sequencer to pick up on the length of the note. Maybe in gate mode, the longer you hold down the note, the longer the length of the note will be. However in "One Shot Toggle mode" you just need to tap the pad and it plays the sample from start to finish.
7. Man I could go on for days as to how many feature could be added. Amazing app. I am thoroughly impressed. This could potentially smoke all the PSP beat making apps out there.
Ability to create chords and melodies from a single-pitch sample, without having to assign the same sample to multiple pads and pitch-shift. Virtual keyboard or the ability to somehow do this in the sequencer.
Standard reverb in the effects rack (versus the 'discrete' slap-back echo type currently there).
Ability to control the volume of an entire pattern at once, as it recurs in different parts of a composition - rather than having to clone the pattern.
Other time signatures, especially 6/8 & the like. Ability to set a 'global swing' variable, i.e. give all 16ths the same delay or feel.
It would be great to be able to just delete an entire measure or measures. Currently the only way to do this is move all of the pattern blocks following the deletion backwards.
Also, it would be very helpful to be able to change the order of patterns in the sequencer, i.e. move them up or down. This would let you group the patterns in a way that makes sense - for example, variations/fills on a main pattern which are created later on and end up isolated at the bottom of the sequencer, which makes it hard to correctly switch back and forth from main pattern to fill or switch from e.g. one drum loop to another.
my wishlist:
- when loading sample to a cell and in play mode, let us hear the sample in the beat as in battery or idrum iphone
- yes the min 4 bar recording would be nice
- i dont need any more effects (maybe the filter); exporting all the kits and samples in 1 go and then effecting it in ableton would be absolute enough
- beatpack should save the last directories
- beatpack could handle multiple files at once (so if i select 16 sounds it loads them automaticall into cells)
- like velocity editing in the pattern seq, the pitch and maybe the filter settings would be supercool
- the lovely apple two-fingers-opening-zoom option in the sequencer (both in song and pattern mode)
- more pads/cells
and for sure: thank You guys for this already amazing app. having so much posts in this topic means everyone loving it, otherwise we had been deleted the app after 2 days and not posting ideas as idiots muhahhah <!-- s:) --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_e_smile.gif" alt=":)" title="Smile" /><!-- s:) -->
Dunno if anyone mention it, but I have a problem seeing which pad is selected or not. It would be nice to have a slighlty brighter color or shade of the existant. That shouldn't be a big problem for Intua team. Everything else looks like you guys want iCubase on your phone. Well..that won't cost 20USD

These two are absolute essentials for me, especially no.6, as you could use this to simulate no.5 if necessary.
Stick a resonant filter on the output channels, and you'd effectively have something like a souped-up SU-10 in the iPhone.

Thank you again Intua for a great product.
