Featured "Internal" Artist Samples [reply from Man Parrish]

edited July 2008 in General
i thought i'd test an upload of the supplied content (Man Parrish etc) but you can't seem to be able to do that - for the intua guys - i guess this is a licensing issue, but i think it would be great to be able to clear these kits from the iphone with the option to restore at a later date

Hey,

This is Man Parrish. Yes, you're correct..! It is a licensing issue. Part of the deal with our "featured artist" samples is that they can't be freely distributed. It saves on us artist having to pay lawyers later on, when someone rips us off, and makes some nice $$ with a re-mix .. lol ! Besides, it's pretty standard practice in the industry to protect original sample stuff like that.

BTW .. As far as having enough room for samples...an 8GB or 16GB iPhone should have plenty that you shouldn't have to "offload" the included content, to make more room. I think BeatMaker can hold up to 35 meg of samples. By comparison, when I do 24+ tracks in LogicPro, that comes out to about 50 megs of audio, this is 16 tracks of loops and small one shot samples, so that's a LOT of sample space for all that iPhone memory! My internal sample pack is like 6 megs, for comparison.

Hint: If you're going to do a full song, I suggest re-starting your phone first. It probably would flush out the memory and clear up / defrag some ram space that may have some junk or data stuck in it. It may also stop some background things [gps location services] that could take up processor power and fight with the app.

Here's also another hint.. you MAY want to shut off your phone [put it in airplane mode] while you are composing. Until an update arrives, you may loose your work [as I found out] when it switches over to answer that call. So if you got a good groove happening... shut off the phone part and save your work !

This is a great app in its infancy. These guys at Intua are committed to making this the best thing out there, and the proof is already here in version 1.0.

Hey...Glad you like the included sample stuff !

Thanx,

-Man Parrish

You had to run your mouth and get nasty? .. WTF ? How old are you?

You don't know the deal or the legal reasons that certain samples are "locked" inside BeatMaker.
[...for the record] I gave my samples for ->FREE<- to BeatMaker so people could have fun with it. Never asked for a dime either..

Now, as you say.. If I was "into" myself and lawyers, crying over lost income or making bucks off of this, I'd be charging people to download my sh*t as a Sample Pack. I didn't. Gave it to support this great app and wanted nothing financial back in return.
Not asking for props either.. I just asked BeatMaker that my stuff was not easily copied. So.. WTF are you talking about?

BTW, is that a YouTube video of you spinning at a "teen picnic" in a park somewhere ??

    Searched YouTube for DJ Discord.
    Here's what came up:

Man Parrish, great to have you input in the forum. I'm guessing you are privy to a few BeatMaker secrets <!-- s;) --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_e_wink.gif" alt=";)" title="Wink" /><!-- s;) --> but far be it from me to try and twsist your arm to divulge.
Much talk on the forum revolves around killer features that people would like to see. I'd love to know what you'd like to see added in terms of features. Please share.

Haha, I'll be damned if that youtube video isn't the bane of my existence. No, that is definitely not me!

My sincerest apologies for being so lippy about it, I was in a weird mood last night, but that is no excuse. I have heated opinions on and issues with sample clearance situations. To me, it wouldn't have been THAT hard to put together a kit that could be freely distributed, however, I would imagine that it wasn't necessarily your idea to keep those kits locked, and I certainly appreciate any contribution to this great program from anyone, particularly an old school hip hop cat.

Anyway, thanks for checking in with us and extra thanks for the sounds, seriously my bad for being such a jerk about it.

No problem bro.. Apology totally accepted... but you gotta admit that the awful YouTube link was kinda good.. lol ! <!-- s:twisted: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_twisted.gif" alt="" title="Twisted Evil" /><!-- s:twisted: -->

As far as locking the samples in BeatMaker... Intua would have legal and liability issues if the internal stuff wasn't locked. It's not meant to screw anyone over, but rather to be "fair" to those that contributed.

Honestly, I sold 3.5 million records back in the day, and NEVER made anything off it [not even an cash advance, I was soooo young] So it helps knowing that someone won't just do a remix and throw it out there and rip me off.

On the other hand... I have no issues AT ALL with giving my original samples out at all. It's just nice to know where they are, so I can enjoy what's done with them too, instead of someone just ripping them off and me hearing it in some club, etc... I think you know what I mean...

Maybe we can have a "remix" contest of my old sh*t and to be fair, have people vote for a winner and give out something as a prize [herpies..lol?]

    ======

    Hey,

I love being here, since I totally support this app. BeatMaker like any company obviously has trade secrets, and unless they release them they probably won't surface here. It's not to torture you, but rather ... Why give any competitors the upper hand... right?

What I CAN tell you, is that from the President of Intua {BeatMaker] down, these guys are TOTALLY committed to making this thing the coolest app on the market ! They have the obvious programming skills to do this [already have]. Things take a while to write code, adjust, tweak and work out any issues, etc.. They want to get it in your hands as fast as you want it. They just want to make sure they deliver you a solid product.

I know they watch the forums, so this is a great place to add feature requests. Also you have to remember, this is an amazing platform [iphone] and while it's not a full blown Mac, it is incredibly powerful. There are some processor and CPU limits, but I'm sure there is plenty of headroom right now to grow.

So... I think these guys deserve either 1) an office full of hookers or 2) a first class paid vacation from they way they worked round the clock to get this app delivered for the iPhone AppStore launch. Personally option 1 sounds good to me..

    What I'd like to see:

I'm using BeatMaker as a "starter tool" for ideas that I can then sync over to LogicPro. New effects are cool, but the efx on a bigger platform are obviously better due to a full blown Mac's processor strength. So "operational" stuff that keeps your creative flow is personally more importiant from where I sit. It sucks if you spend half your time fighting the software.. right? BeatMaker is well thought out !

    But I'd love to see:

    1) Mixer page
    2) Darker division lines in step sequencer to easily see groups of 4 bars better..
    3) 4,8 & 32nd note resolution for step sequencer
    4) Delete internal files [which I believe is coming in 1.0.1]
    5) Option for battery icon to watch your portable power and maybe a "reminder screen" to put your phone in airplane mode, so when the phone switches to incoming calls it won't wipe out your work.
    6) A simple synth or a way to split a sample over pads automatically at different pitches. Load a bass sound and you got the makings of a song ..
    7) A million dollar bank account to give to these guys. They broke ass on this so far.!

There are a ton of other things, but realistically, the stuff in these forums would fill a good year of writing code. Remember, this is a iPhone, not an 8-core Mac. So there are some limits to what that processor can do all at once. [remember there are other apps and processes related to the phone side that are running at the same time!] This is a testomony to Intua for GREAT code and to Apple for a full featured PORTABLE device ! You guys do know that a form of OSX is running on your phone.. right ?

I just read that research is going into using the unleashed power of onboard secondary Graphics Chips [GPU] for crunching non-graphic data. It's apparently a but hard to convert the code to "graphics speak" and back to "program speak" again, but who knows.. A future apple update can boost the processor power and all kinds of cool stuff can be added. And if that isn't enough, rumors are out that apple has some REALLY cool new powerful, portable devices under development.

BeatMaker is NOT static. It will grow. But aren't ya glad you can at least do this, while the rest of the world is still hung up on Guitar Hero ? {Which I also love..lol]

    Keep posting !!
