How do you choose an oil painting for your home?
I have been thinking about adding an oil painting to my home, but I am not very experienced when it comes to buying art. I usually know whether I like a picture when I see it, yet I find it harder to judge whether it will actually work in a particular room. The walls are fairly neutral, so I could probably choose something colourful, although I do not want the painting to dominate everything else. I am also wondering whether it is better to choose a work based on its subject, colour palette or simply the feeling it gives you. What would you recommend checking before making a decision?

I would probably begin with the overall atmosphere you want the room to have and then look at paintings that fit that idea. If you want to compare different styles, you could browse an buy oil painting and make a shortlist before deciding. I would pay attention to the dimensions, dominant colours and composition, but I would not ignore your personal reaction either. A painting can technically match a room and still not feel right to you. It can also be helpful to view the same work several times rather than making a decision after the first impression. Taking your time is particularly useful when the artwork is intended to stay on the wall for many years.
Thanks, considering the atmosphere of the room as well as my own reaction makes the decision feel much less complicated.
