Setting Sample Tempo

edited May 2011 in General
this is probably a really stupid question but I'm trying to timestretch a bunch of samples and obviously before that, you need to set the sample's tempo and I just don't really get what to do...how are you supposed to know the duration in bars of the sample? I'm just used to other things, like in FL for example, you'd lay it out on the playlist and you'd see how long it is...I don't see how the ruler on top is supposed to help since it just changes to whatever you put the duration as

it's probably something really small I'm missing, I've just been out of the production loop for a while <!-- s:lol: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_lol.gif" alt="" title="Laughing" /><!-- s:lol: --> I guess I'm just trying to know how you'd figure out how many bars your sample is so you can set that as the duration and then get an accurate BPM so you can timestretch accurately (if that makes sense)

    Hi,

It is important for the software to know the duration of your sample. Basically, it's easier for a human being to know if a sample lasts one or more bars (just count how many "phrases" or repeated rythmic patterns happen in the sample) than for a software to guess it accurately. Once you told the program how many bars a sample is, it can compute the BPM automatically (length divided by the number of bars, also taking into account the signature).

    Cheers,
    Colin
