J Dilla Flying Lotus effect?

edited November 2012 in Support
I was wondering do any of you know how to get that J Dilla, flying lotus slight Brick wall effect using compressor? Can this even be done in beatmaker 2?

The effect I am talking about can be done with parallel compression is like a shrinking effect.

Yes this is what I'm talking about except I don't want it to be on accident lol. The term for what I want to do is called side chain compression. I'm not sure if I could do it in this daw though. Maybe In A fx bus perhaps, I'm not sure.

Well, in case you haven't heard, the new update has side chaining in the compressor.
Now on "donuts", I believe a lot of the "ducking " sound was done during mastering. Almost sounds like tape.

    Watchu know about Donuts? lol

But I didn't know that it was gonna be added to the next update, thanks a lot for telling me about this.

I think you know exactly what im talking about now. Kinda like FlyLo did with this song and how the kick drum moves on the beat. I guess that what you mean by "Ducking".

But you could master that kinda of effect in their by tape?

i guess you are getting the best answers possible considering the question but there is no such thing as a dilla or flo effect.

i would recommend using other gear than bm for a particular sound.(with bm2 as a sequencer)
for example korg electribe sx which goes for cheap and was rumoured to be used on later dillas work while in hospital.

with both mx and sx the compressor gives you a smashed sound easily. that is not what makes the music good tho.

He's talking about when the kick hits, everything else in the mix "ducks" briefly. Done right, it can make the track sound bigger. Side chaining during mix or hitting a brick wall just right during mastering.

and i am saying that the sort of compression is pretty easy in electribe sx which was apparently used on donuts alot and is responsible for its sound. thanks for explaining sidechaining for me though.

Have you got a link to a source for that? I thought it was his mpc and the sp303

    here is the photo of dilla studio - <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.futureproducers.com/forums/music-genres/rap-hip-hop-r-b/producers-studio-pics-227130/">http://www.futureproducers.com/forums/m ... cs-227130/</a><!-- m -->

third pic from the top shows the korg sx.

to me - donuts sounds very much like my sx. it´s easy to get the overcompressed sound with the valves to supply the extra grit. donuts was rumoured to have been made in the hospital and i can easily picture the electribe being used.
stepsequencing is not good for hiphop grooves but combined with beatmaker its pretty damn good. i use more mx than sx though.

also they are cheap. so yeah - i´d recommend it.

Yeah thats exactly what I mean dub.
Although I will look into that electribe sx Usul, it looks hard to operate though lol. But as they say any thing that comes easy is never too good (or something like that).
