Audiobus+bm2=ok at best...here is why First of all your running lots of apps some of which(alchemy for instance) are quite heavy alone on ipad3 or 2. Next, its a piece of dooky to have to set it up constantly. Next audio tracks are not exactly moveable...and lack lots of edit ability on tracks. So while what you say is workable to some degree, its not the best way to do things for everyone.
It is a sampling program. The samples that come with it are there to get you started. You can easily sample new sounds via a USB audio interface, from your iTunes library and as was pointed out, from other apps. via Audiobus. As far as being just "ok" I say bull$hit. The reason I say that is because back in the day dudes created some really amazing stuff with far, far less. Today's instant gratification, gimme, gimme society really pisses me off with their entitlement attitude. If they realized the amount of programming effort that went into apos like Beatmaker they would be far more appreciative. For the amazing things that can be done with it, on a portable device too, for $20! C'mon son. Smdh. Go to school and learn Objective C and create a better app. I dare you
The lack of people developing sounds for it states my case ! Have you built a keyboard sampler patch library for it...if so link me.
Yea, i could sample sounds via the usb apogee interface i have, sure, but then there is no editor for at least decent editing, then there is a lack of non global per layer synthesis that really doesnt allow anything but basic sampler keyboard patches to be made. Sure they coded it, and it is their app...they can drop support on it anytime they like. My statements are being made from the viewpoint of a producer using a beatmaking software, and reporting its shortcomings...its an opinion, just like your post is your opinion.
Dudes back in the day usually went to a real recording studio for about 5-10 bucks per hour, and had access to hook their machines to other midi equipment etc. yo, but check it...lets compare the old as ensoniq eps and its engine to the engine of the keyboard in bm2! No comparison....the ensoniq is way deeper....and dont go off on the money, i can buy a used eps for about 100.00 usd vs 520.00 for an ipad and bm2.
In fact about any eighties sampler had a deeper engine.
There is no gimme attitude to me what so ever...i will gladly pay for the updates or iap. I have stated this many times. I will support any company making quality shit.
Everybody talks about amazing shit being done with the beatmaker2 software...could you point me to some links of amazing shit please...or are you just pulling this outta your ass.
It samples... It chops samples... It has a nanostudio like sequencer with less features It records audio tracks
I give it that, but it needs lots of interface improvements, workflow improvements, and sound quality improvements.
I dare you to be a nonconformist.
Comparison: auria (1 developer) VS bm2 (development team). Do you realize auria is about to get midi? Have you used the effects in auria, or heard it awesome sound quality...i bet you instruments are coming, and i know what one of them are. Your argument was valid in some ways, but your point was missing...i should go to school for objective c programming and make a better app, because this somehow will make you feel complete. If beatmaker is blowing your mind with its amazing perfection then use it son, and dont dl updates, you dont need em.
Alien, I can totally agree with you. I would love and think it could be that All-inOne app. Honestly i think they already reached their plateau in what they first set out to achieve. That is a great music production app for mainly hip hop on the ISO. Given it was some what of a toy when it was first released, its come a long way.
Ya you can produced other type music with BM but clearly BM was made closer to MPC style music making. (and thats great for me) and a lot of others.
I don't think the developers are resting at all. We had plenty of great updates and the app is still relatively new (The app environment is still finding its way). as we can see with IAA, Audiobus, in app purchases...etc.
So would people be more happy if Intuna treated BM more like a desktop software. With major updates once a year and having to buy each upgrade? Personally i'm fine with free smaller updates, as long is they keep working on the app I'm happy.....and we all know it has plenty of future potential or things that can be improved.
Uhhh alien bro, please google or youtube "amen break". It was a sample that started drum n bass.
also lemme quickly give a shout out to mattheieu and rest of intua team because no doubt they created a revolutionary product ala Beatmaker.
Buuuut...
mcgee speaks the truth. if you are a beginner or hobbyist, bm2 is probably all you ever need and possibly overkill but for a serious professional or perfectionist, there is much room to improve. Something as simple (to my non technical ass) as sample layering which is commonly done by majority of hip hop and edm producers do all the time is lacking. I crave and beg to make tight music on a train but the constant workarounds distract from my creative process. yes, is it possible to make great music with tools we have now, for sure. but for cats such as mcgee and myself where even any bit of inspiration is killed by having to involve our analytical brain to do something instead of just chilling out and "vibing" off of some idea in our head is something that can be improved.
i would also pay extra for a more pro app but sadly thats not where the money is at. its for garageband newbie users
I'm just curious what a "serious professional or perfectionist" is? as i know the likes of DJ Premier and Pete Rock made serious music on less. And they had way more work arounds lol.
Basically It's all what you make of it and your creative, no doubt the right person can get some serious music out for BM alone. but If you are looking for something else there are lot of other DAW out that will do professional* work.
sorry, respect to those cats but Dr Dre, Timbaland are my hip hop inspirations.
as for drum and bass, obviously that break by itself isnt enough. I'd add kicks and snares in diff spots, hi hats in others, other simple loops on top of it, behind it, filters here and there. I only brought that up as you made a comment about hip hop using other ppl's samples when ur genre of choice was essentially started from a sample.
hey guys, lemme apologize to both of you if im givin off an attacking negative vibe. we're all passionate musicians here and im sure you both can make great music. im just a little stressed and frustrated because im not rich and i was really hoping ever since audiobus came out to make a great album usinf ios apps only. and while the technology has certainly come a long way, for my personal workflow and creativity, ableton and a regular mpc with pads still outshine by light years in terms of ease of use and feel. so thats why im being a little bitch. by admitting that out loud and to myself, i can appreciate ios for what it is, another tool, but not the end all solution that i was putting expectations on it to be.
I just feel people except everything from BM in every update. Of course its not perfect, Its started out as a app on a god dam phone ( In my mind thats still Fkn amazing). and in a few short years look how far BM has come.
I just think if people stop bitch about whats not in the app and talk more about what they can actually do with it, Then BM development would progress more. Yes it not perfect, yet BUT ever update gets better and thats what gets me excited.
so none of the above suggestions work? audiobus with any of thr other million apps to tweak any sound possible? on the thread i started regarding layering samples, that'll pretty much solve a big part of my problem. if a kick isnt fat enough, layer two kicks on each other. maybe if bm2 had a frequency analyzer, that'd be cool as you could see where each sample lies in the spectum and beef up your kicks appropriately.
is there another app, desktop software or mpc feature you were thinking of?
type in granular synthesis and audiobus in google and there should be 5-10 apps in there that should satisfy your thirst.
@alienbrain - im gonna bump this thread because your other post got me thinking about my workflow and trying to advance my shit to the next level as well. So for you, the thing thats lacking with audiobus are the "process chain" capabilities? For example, add distortion to a specific loop, a way to tweak out a kick, perhaps ONLY the kick while the other parts are unprocessed, etc? When I listen to electronic beats nowdays (any genre), thats the big difference i hear compared to past electronica. The detail to little segments of the beat and how it evolves and changes throughout the song. Maybe in the past, only trance or UK stuff would have elements of that but now i hear it a lot more. Obviously with technology, it's much easier now than in past so question is, what is best tool to accomplish that with?
I'd agree that Beatmaker alone is a lot more than some used to work with getting out tunes that sounded great and became hits. I hate that someone would be so limiting in his view to rate Beatmaker as a hip-hop only tool.
It's a kick ass phrase sampler/more than simple drum sampler with a lot of goodies built in. I would like to see some deeper sampler abilities (layering, etc) and some deeper editing tools with some quick editing tool access in the workflow, but given the frequency of updates, I think it's coming along nicely.
Keep up the great work. I would like to see some of the suggestions here implemented in the future as long as it doesn't bloat the software. Best thing to me is simple workflow and using this to get the most out of simple tools and fx.
Most of the time a 16 pad controller and Beatmaker 2 is all I need. I have some other programs to do multitracking in finer detail.
For live work and just playing a sampler it really is a ton of fun. Got about 21 songs on the live play list for Beatmaker projects.
I don't do any hip-hop with Beatmaker. Electronica - DnB, Dubstep, Chillstep, downbeat.

Come on man BM is a excellent app and has great potential, especially in the hip hop area of music, Which it was made for in the first place.
Lets support it not hate on it.
I would love and think it could be that All-inOne app.

I wish they would do a major upgrade to BM3 and make it only for the iPad.
leave BM2 for the iPhone and ipad2/3 as a sketch pad.
I would GLADLY pay more for a BM Premium, no doubt.
