Audio unit / IAA sampling problems

Help please guys
I am really struggling trying to sample iSEM au or an Animoog plugin as an inter app
I have watched a YouTube tutorial and get the idea but recording a sample seems to be hit and miss and doesn't work very often. The process switches from 'start' to 'waiting' but doesn't then always switch to 'record'
I'm sure it's me, but any help much appreciated as this is very frustrating

    Maybe the threshold is set too high (when you record 'on input')?

    Had the threshold level turned up to -10db
    Lower levels work perfect
