All you need to do is move any patterns that are in the way to where they need to be, then drag the new pattern in. There isn't a "ripple edit" mode that would push other patterns out when you drag them into the timeline.
@mathieugarcia has mentioned elsewhere that they are investigating markers and such, i would assume that ripple editing and such would be part of that investigation, Reapers regions should be looked at here for inspiration.

As far as I can tell, there is no copy/paste wherever feature. Yes, copying the pattern overlays the next pattern...Behavior was the same in BM2...
