I just tried this and it worked, so may be worth a try next time (Not saying i have run it past the devs or anything though, just took a guess)
I loaded a drum loop on to an audio track, looped it, hit play, turned down the iPad volume and started the hard reset, the audio loop playing stopped the iPad from shutting the screen off or locking.
Hopefully the CPU meter changing continually will stop the screen getting any burn after the hard reset has finished, and you haven't had to change any setting in IOS.
