Loading a sample to a pad then deleting its layer (layer, not sample) will leave the Link Group and Pad Note options available on that empty pad. Create a Link Group with a pad hosting a sample or AU and use the empty pad to sound the note of your choosing. Works with drums synths like Ruismaker so you can have an empty pad set up to trigger a particular drum sound in the pad hosting the single instance of the AU.
