Mics for 2nd Gen Ipod Touch

edited February 2009 in General
Does anyone know if the 2nd gen iPod touch and beatmaker will allow you to use the mics that connect via the docking slot or is it just compatible with the mobile phone style earphone and mic attachments? I'm wondering about the LOGIC3 MIP159 especially. May thanks in advance.

No, it would seem that the Logic3 MIP159 is not compatible with the iPod Touch 2G. Amazon.co.uk has a customer review that says this:

"The product description is not great at saying which versions of the iPod are supported, and would seem to indicate that the iPod Touch is supported, but one glance at the packet when it arrived made it quite clear that it isn't."

Thanks for the reply, its a shame we seem to be restricted to the crap headset mics!
Beatmaker is still an awesome app for the money though.

oh, but you're NOT restricted to crappy headset mics! LET ME SHOW YOU!!!

First, attach THIS to your iPod:
http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProductP ... _Id=250226

Now you have 3 cables coming out of your iPod. They are:

01. left audio output
02. right audio output
03. mono audio INPUT!!!

Now, find which one is the audio input (#3), and attach THIS to it:
http://www.music123.com/American-Record ... 3.Music123

Okay, got it attached? One final step:

ATTACH ANY DYNAMIC MICROPHONE YOU WANT! You could even attach the output from a mixer to it so that you can adjust the input levels and use phantom powered mics! You could attach your guitar!

Beautiful, isn't it?

Do you know if this works for the 1st Gen ipod touch as well? If possible show a video of this Belkin cable in action.

not sure about 1st generation... I'll have to look into that. Does the 1st gen iPod use a TRRS jack as well? TRRS is tip-ring-ring-sleeve. The tip routes to the first audio out (one side of your headphone), the second ring to the second audio out (the other side of your headphone), and the third ring (it's one extra ring than would be found on the jack of a normal pair of earbuds) routes to the audio input. The headphone mics work the same way; the mic is routed through that third extra ring. All that the belkin cable does is split those three signals into separate RCA jacks instead of sending them to 2 earbuds and a crappy headphone mic.

But yeah, as for whether the 1st gen iPod Touch has TRRS, I'm not sure. I gotta go right now, but I'll look into it later and get back to you.

That, my man, is brilliant!! Thanks so much!

There is no way to do this on 1st Gen Touches. The proper AV cable looks like this > > http://www.handhelditems.com/composite- ... 14212.html . It doesn't use the 3 sleeved tip, but the standard dock connector because the 1st gen touch didn't come with Mic input. Zee,
I got all the bits together, plugged it all in, hit record and got an error. 2 seconds later i try again and it works perfectly, happy days! Since then it just wont work again Beatmaker gives an error message and tells me to restart but it makes no difference. Any ideas??

Well, the good news is that if it worked once, you SHOULD be able to get it working again!

If BeatMaker is telling you to restart, I would do a manual reboot of the iPod by holding down the Power and Home buttons at the same time for like 30 seconds or something. Just keep holding those buttons down together until the iPod turns itself off. Don't touch anything on the screen, it will shut down by itself if you hold them long enough. Then once it's been off for a few seconds turn it back on again. It'll take a while to boot up, but it will start you with a clean system so you're not dealing with memory insufficiency issues. I think the iPod caches stuff in the memory that it doesn't quite clean up properly and after a while you gotta do a reboot like that to clear it all... this is especially important for intensive programs like BeatMaker.

Once you've done this, before you start BeatMaker I'd plug in your microphone assembly first and THEN open the app. I don't know if the order matters too much, but it might help BeatMaker to autodetect that there's a microphone device plugged into the audio input channel if you have all that stuff plugged in before you start it up.

I don't know if these suggestions will help solve your problem or not, but I hope it does! Let me know how it works out! But like I said: you had it working once, so you KNOW it will work if you can just manage to figure out what you did to get it that way. It can be frustrating figuring that out, and it might be kind of finicky, but at least now you know it's possible with your setup, and that's a good thing!

very cool! so are you saying that what (normally) is the video out (yellow) in the TRRS connector also doubles as a mono audio input? I never knew that.
I have a bunch of those TRRS cables from my Archos. Can you confirm that this is the case or have I missed something?
Cheers.

dear intua!

pls start a thread or a new section, where u test the aviable accessories, like this av cable from belkin.

to be able to sample not from a mic would highly increase the useability of beatmaker, so i would def by that cable and even sell my mpc and stay with beatmaker forever in sampling heaven!

thanks

Yes; that's exactly correct! What is normally the video out is actually a mono audio input. And yes, you could theoretically plug any audio output source into this input. That includes the audio out from a PC, the headphone out from a casio keyboard or even the line out from a mixer or guitar amplifier. You might want to get a simple mixer or even just a stereo amplifier to make sure your audio output isn't too loud or too quiet (it will sound crappy if it's not at the right volume), but it will work.

I should point out however that when I tested this with a standard AV cable purchased at Best Buy, I noticed that the yellow and red outputs were switched for some reason. I have no idea why, but it really doesn't make any difference. You just gotta test it to make sure you've got the right one. If you're not sure, try plugging the red and white outputs into the left and right RCA jacks on your television and see if you can hear both the left and right audio channels (stereo sound) coming through your TV speakers when you play audio on your iPod.

Plug it in and out
Restart ipod and beatmaker
And all possibile combinations
I was able to sample twice

But after i stopped recording it never started again

I got fed up after half hour

So it maybe working but with a lot of headaches

Yes, this is disappointing. However, the 1G with 2.2 firmware can use some dock mics. The iVoiceIII works AND it has a line-input. I haven't attempted to hook up a dynamic mic yet, but one should be able to feed a 1/8" stereo from a mixer. The only problem is that BM does not currently support audio recording on the 1G iPod Touch even with a supported mic. The iVoice works fine with most voice recording apps, Fourtrack, and Fring.

Oh wow, I didn't know the ivoice worked for fring. That would be so incredible if beatmaker worked with this. Probably my #1 desired beatmaker feature. I'd rather buy a $30 than upgrading my whole ipod. Sampling on the go would be so awesome!

I think saving the $30 and putting it towards a 2g itouch would be much smarter. You get a better CPU, Screen, Speaker, and Mic input. If you sell your old touch and upgrade I can't see it costing more then $40-$50. It'd be a much better investment considering support for the ivoice III is not mandatory by app devs; and not to mention you won't have a big add-on hanging off the end. Craigslist my friend;nuff said.

Also 2g itouch J.B. should be released shortly.

I contemplated upgrading to the 2g, but I figure it would have cost me at least an extra $100.00. There's not much difference between the 1g and 2g (not for the cost difference, at least). I ended up buying the iVoiceIII for $25.00. It works with almost all of the Apps from the Appstore AND it has a line-input!

Upgrading to the 2g would be nice (especially if they figure out a JB), but there's no reason BM can't support the iVoice on the 1G as well.
