Let's get know each other

edited December 2008 in General
I figured since this will eventually be a large community surrounding BeatMaker, we might as well get to know each other and get some community building going on. That way collaborations and the like will come easier.

I'll start first.

My name is Jameson. I'm from Southern California, and I am a Political Science major at CSULB.

I dabble in music, but I recently started recording a lot more.

My website is http://www.projectid.net, and my blog is http://blog.projectid.net/journal.

Who's next?

Anyway, I love this software, and I'm working on making some beatpacks for this community, hopefully I'll have one or two up in the next week or so. I look forward to this forum becomeing a wonderful resource for us all. I also look forward to what this software will turn into.

    I'll introduce myself,
My name's Doug, I've been in bands and recording music since high school. I started with trance music, moved on to japanese rock, on to indie music, and have played recently in post-rock and idm influenced bands. Its been a few years since I put out much original music but beatmaker has reinspired me to explore where I left off with post-rock/idm music. I've spent the last several years recording people pretty regularly, you can hear a selection of that work at spartaneyerecording.com and myspace.com/spartaneyerecording . Professionally I'm director of creative services at an abc affiliate station in the shenandoah valley of virginia. The last sequencing/sampling/soft-synth software I used was Buzz, which I loved dearly, but I switched to macs in college and never found a good replacement I could afford so beatmaker is an unexpected and wonderful surprise. Can't wait to hear what people will come up with using beatmaker, it would be great if we could get an additional forum on this site for sharing work!

    Hello everyone,

My name's Charlie and I make folksy-blues-electro music under the name Heroes of the Revolution. I'll be using beatmaker as a mobile drum machine, making loops and patterns on the fly as part of a solo/2-3 person live performance. In fact I might use two -- one on an iPhone, the other on an iPod touch -- to get some really cool layers going.

Oh, also by day I'm a journalist and illustrator living in London. My favourite colour is blue.

    My name is Carmot.

I have started making music as a teenager, on my electric organ, with no training. (it showed)
It became clear quite soon that I would not become a musical superstar. Eventually I accepted the fact and went into Science.

I had a friend in college who had one of those programmable synths and I programmed the Genesis song 'Land of confusion' on it. My first 'sequencing'.

Years later, they invented the internet and eventually I found www.acidplanet.com where I learned about loop based music making. My remixes were really crappy but I guess when you look back at your older work, it always seems suboptimal.

Just this year I decided to stop making crappy remixes and started making my own music. My software of choice was until a few days ago: Reason and Acid.
With the arrival of BeatMaker, I have started using it primary as a drum/percussion sequencer as this seems to take up the longest in my music making and I have lots of time during my daily commute.

I did start a blog just to talk about my experience with BeatMaker:

I have my first BM kit available here:

I love this program! It's great to have a drum machine on the train while I head to work. I've almost missed my stop three days in a row messing with my pocket 808/707/909/606/RZ-1! LOL!

    Hey

I'm Josh - I'm 31 and live near Sheffield in the UK.

I'm into mid-90's drum & bass/jungle, hip hop, funk etc... I've always wanted to get into production (being a Jungle DJ for many years) - Dabbled with Garageband when I got my Mac, but couldn't dedicate enough time to get to grips with it.

This looks like a much cooler idea... On the train, having some lunch on your own, sitting on the toilet make some music!

Seems like it'll do some very cool stuff, but is accessible enough for beginners to get to grips with.

Now could someone please upload a nice jungle BeatPack?
  • Greets everyone. I've been writing music and DJing/playing live for about 18 years now, mainly electronic stuff though I play other instruments too (guitar and piano). Primarily I'm into downtempo and chill out music now, though I still do club music now and then too. I run a small mastering studio in Seattle, having recently moved here from Chicago. I've been a beta tester for a lot of larger music manufacturers like Access, Emu, Ableton, Roland, Elektron, etc. Currenty I help run the AbletonLiveDj.com website, and my main apps are Logic 8, Zebra2, Live, and Wavelab for mastering.

I was a big fan of Bhajis Loops for the Palm platform, but hated having to remember to bring my Palm with me in case I got an idea. Glad to see that someone has done something like this for the iPhone, as I always have it with me. Now, about the ability to enter melodic data in BeatMaker....

This is Justin. Just finished law school at Loyola and I'm currently studying for the bar. I saw a review for this program and thought it would be a nice study break. My iTunes playlist is at least 50% samples and breaks, but I don't know anything about production. Do we have a thread for questions yet? If not, could someone tell me how to turn an mp3 into a kit pad? Is there like another software suite I should be using with this?

My name is lou. I cant really say I dabble to much into music, untill now. Iv tried in the past using various programs out there, but without any hand holding, its kinda hard. I find my self "Beat boxing" more than any white man should... in the car with some tunes, or in the shower.. walking in the hallways at work..
So, maybe now, I can get whats in my head on to Beatmaker and remix a song the way I think it should go...

Anyhoo.. Posted my 1st 55 second loop in the Beatmaker Showcase =)

Dislamer: Great program.. and for 20 bucks? I think we got it on the cheap! <-- Want to be grandfathered in if the price goes up on a new Version lol /Disclamer

    Hi Beatmakers ..

Wow am I so freakin' excited about running around with a sequencer in my back pocket. This is like a dream come true. Goofing around with portable sequencers is a hobby thing for me and I have Bhajis Loops for the Palm, NanoLoop for the GBA / DS and now once sequencer to rule them all ! I basically bought an iPhone because of the Beatmaker application .. seriously.

I'm going to be submitting as much content (artist kits) as I can between jobs, and expect to be turning out quite a few. Anyone have any special requests for sounds?

Born 1971 in the US, I started with sound production in 1986, recording and editing on-air promo's, stations ID's and interviews with a 1/4" open reel tape deck and razor blade for my local college radio station. During the 90's I worked as a recording musician, live sound engineer and recording assistant and slowly transitioned into commercial projects. Between 2002 and 2007 I worked with 2 of Canada's top post audio & music production companies delivering Surround & HD audio for broadcast. Currently I run my own audio production services company outside of the Toronto area, providing creative and technical services to the games and broadcast industries.

Damn I love this Beatmaker software, and think it's really badass to see a group of people that are so like minded as in this forum. As I posted earlier, I haven't felt this creatively empowered in a while. We have a studio with all the fancy stuff, but I see so much potential with this thing.

I go by the name of **brainphreak** and have been playing guitar, bass, electronics, and just about any instrument I can get my hands on for about 15 years. Generally I have trouble when it comes to writing drums for music and have resorted to things like "EZdrummer" integrated into Logic. The BeatMaker application has made writing drums on my own much easier and satisfying than any program or even hardware equipment I have had. One thing is for certain and that is, this application is teaching me more about writing drums everyday than I have ever had. I originated in San Diego, CA. and have been in several "indie" and "experimental" rock or psychedelic bands. Influences range from trip hop, industrial and IDM , to Heavy Metal , Jazz and Progressive.

I never thought I would use the iphone for music, but I am currently using it to help write beats for a small project I am working on with a friend called "Strangling Marilyn". The music is influence by reggae, 80's music, metal, new wave, gothic, and just about anything we can think of. Artist influences like Danny Elfman, Nick Cave, Mike Patton, Buckethead, Jesus Lizard etc.

You can check out the project at http://www.myspace.com/stranglingmarilyn

Also you can check out some of my previous electronic/glitch, experimental noise, and various other recordings at:

http://www.brainphreak.net (some experimental and atonal guitar tabs there for anyone interested)

Glad to see the community growing, and look forward to hearing full projects come out of this application. Amazing quality application for a handheld device, this application alone boosts the value of the iphone/ipod touch significantly if you ask me.

Oh yeah check out the page I am working on for sharing beat kits, and feel free to add my public BeatPack Server.

http://theblackpacket.no-ip.biz/beatmaker (soon to be linked on www.ibeatmaker.com I believe)

    publicserver:

first post so hello to all. i've been making mostly sample based electronic music for ages, although I do use abit of hardware. Couple EMU samplers (one E5000 ultra, and one 6400 classic), korg z1, kawai k4, novation nova, korg wavestation, etc. which I usually end up rendering multisamples of whatever for further resampling

i ftp host alot of original and forum user created samples on a few electronic music production forums, can't wait to start building some custom kits to share with you all.

To intua; what a cool app ! i'm probably just never going to get any work done now.

This is a bit late but I'm Sean. I'm a tech-guy from Dallas, TX and work in IT during the day. This program is a literal gift from God to me since I had some financial issues and have had my entire studio packed away in storage for almost a year now due to moving/lack of room. With this I'm producing again on the move wherever I want and I love it! The software still needs a few updates/changes (I'm on 1.3) but for the most part this is amazing. I produce under the name Sinapse, started with Drum and Bass but have slowed down a lot and am more influence by DJ Shadow, RJD2, and the like now. I will be making some kits as soon as I get Beatpack up and running on my laptop. Oh yeah, my myspace music is http://myspace.com/sinapse

    Hey all,

Kevin here from Silicon Valley..SF Bay Area, USA. I started music at 9 on the Sax.. played alto for 7 years before stopping due to not liking my band teacher. Wish I had played piano now. Started messing with drum machines out of high school when I could afford my on Boss drum machine.. moved on to a Yamaha RY-30 and then got a Roland JV-880 synth module. Started playing with Cakewalk in its 1.0 days with a cheap midi keyboard from the Music Teaching tv ad that I thought would teach me piano... not! Eventually moved up to the SB Live soundcard with soundfonts replacing my need for an external synth (or so I thought). Got into the TurtleBeach gear a bit and even tried to help a company from Tawain import and sell some pretty impressive 18-bit and 20-bit DAC soundcards back when 16-bit cards were still all the rage. Didn't go so well. Terratec kinda beat this little company to the market and they've since vanished.

All the while I've been a software engineer, and started on a cross-platform music engine.. but soon realized it was a daunting task to do alone.. and that was when the internet was on 14.4K modems! Got involved with a company called Seers Music.. the original software was written by some well known synth heads of the late 80's/early 90s.. forget there names. Sadly the software was trying to be ported to Win2K+ and would only run decently on a win98SE box. They've since disappeared but was interesting playing with what was available at the time. I still have a dream of making a highly pluggable cross-platform (max/windows/linux/solaris) audio engine that could be used to build upon for sequencers, editors, etc. But.. no time for that stuff now.

As of late I started getting back into the dance/techno sort of music.. the past several months I've upgraded my "home studio" with some gear. I've got a PCR-300 Edirol controller keyboard (very nice keyboard for $150 for anyone wanting a nice controller keyboard with sliders/knobs/programmable buttons and a good feel to it). Got a Mackie 1202-VLZ mixer which I don't use too much, but works to allow my 360, computer output and such go into one mixer so I can output to my monitors or headphones. Headphones I have Sennheiser HD 595's.. sound freaking great. I love Ebay! Got them for 1/2 the price of retail. Most recent editions are a Beheringer B1 mic, KRK Limited Edition 6" monitors (the yellow ones), and an Edirol 24-bit mic/guitar input/output unit to send my mic to my computer in really good clarity. Also use it for output as the 24-bit DACs are pretty nice.

My primary use of all this is for fun.. I have Reason 4 for some things, been using Live 7.1 lately, and also got Melodyne for vocal stuff. My interest in BeatMaker is two fold. First.. as a beat/bass riff maker when I got no mag/book to read, in the bathroom, in the car, etc. But I also got it because a few years back Yamaha had some very kewl hand sized portable synths for several hundred bucks that I always wanted. BeatMaker sounded somewhat similar, and for $20, was a steal! With the update.. we're almost there. Need another bank or two of sounds to really be expressive in a song, and we're golden! Other than that, I have been trying to get my daughter into music. She enjoys singing and writing songs, but at only 10 years of age, it's hard to keep a kid focussed on the potentially long task of writing a song, singing it over and over to get it down, etc. It's been fun tho, good father/daughter time together, and I've been learning a bit more about recording and mixing.. which has been another dream of mine... one day I'd love to be able to do this as a job.. assuming it paid enough to live in this ridiculously overpriced area I live in.

Look forward to seeing more posts, songs, and updated from Intua! Glad to meet you all and be part of something pretty kewl.

    Im Danny Kamhaji, Brooklyn, NYC.
Im a motion graphics designer by day.
Been a music hobbyist for many years. No music published yet, But have gotten close here and there.
As a recent daddy, unfortunately my studio has not been used in a bit, and thats exactly where beatmaker and Intua
become so important for me. It lets me write great ideas that could potentially become songs.
I use it everyday in my commute to work, banging on beats and making kits.
I consider it a strong application and by no means a toy like some of the oher music apps out there
