Record external synth's MIDI cc output as automation?

Hi guys, I'm very new to BM3 so please forgive me if the answer to my question is trivial. I'm trying to get Beatmaker 3 to record knob movements (midi cc) from an external synth (Elektron Syntakt + Digotone) as automation clips and then send the automation back to control the synths when pressing play. Is this possible? Can it be done without having to map a controller to macros and just have BM3 record whatever knob movements are made? Logic pro for ipad does this out of the box when record is hit but I don't get along with it's workflow
