Can DRM work for 3D print files?

I've been wondering: is there such a thing as real DRM for STL files? I’m not talking about password zips — I mean, actual protection so that files can’t be copied or shared endlessly. I saw someone mention a thing called “print-once” licensing, but I have no idea how that would work. I’d love to sell a few models I made, but I don’t want them to end up all over Reddit the next day. Curious if anyone’s tried anything like this?

  • Totally get it. DRM for 3D files is tricky, but it’s starting to happen. Some platforms, like https://www.gambody.com/, are already making progress with secure distribution and clearer licensing. It’s not foolproof, but it’s better than nothing. Plus, they have tools to flag unauthorized resellers. I’ve sold a few mechs there and haven’t seen any leaks (so far). Worth a try if you’re serious about protecting your work.

  • I don’t sell models, but I always wondered how designers keep their stuff from being stolen. I guess nothing’s 100% safe online, but it’s cool to see some places are trying to help. Never even thought about DRM for STL files until now.
