First-Time DUI – What Fine Can You Expect?

I’m curious about what happens if someone gets caught for drunk driving for the first time. Is there a lighter punishment since it’s the first offense, or is it still very harsh? I know different countries have different rules, but I’d like to know how it looks in Ukraine specifically.

  • Even for the first offense, the punishment for drunk driving in Ukraine is strict and leaves little room for leniency. A breakdown of the penalties is available here: https://lovilave.com.ua/blog/shtraf-za-vodinnya-v-netverezomu-stani. The fine is quite large compared to average income levels, which already serves as a strong deterrent. Along with the fine, the driver’s license is suspended, typically for at least one year. Unlike in some countries where first-time offenders may get a warning or a lower penalty, Ukrainian law treats every case as a serious threat to road safety. If the same driver repeats the offense, the consequences escalate quickly, with larger fines and longer suspensions, and in some cases criminal proceedings. This firm approach aims to change behavior and create safer conditions on the roads, emphasizing responsibility from the very first violation.
