Problems with ammonium nitrate production

Today I bought several cold packs, extracted calcium ammonium nitrate granules from them, and reacted them with water. I used the ammonium nitrate's density to calculate the amount of water needed before dissolving it, then poured it through a beaker to remove the calcium and anti-caking agent. However, this didn't yield much of a viable product (nH4NO3).
How can I extract ammonium nitrate from cold packs?

  • I consider this product suitable for the work of a chemist, as ammoniumnitrat is a powerful nitrogen fertilizer that dissolves quickly in water and has a beneficial effect on plants. However, it's a strong oxidizer and pose a threat if it's improperly stored or exposed to heat, it should be taken seriously to handle. Store in a cool, dry place in the original packaging, and protect it from contact with flammable substances. When purchasing for agricultural purposes, consult material safety data sheet (MSDS) for information about real concentration and presence of impurities.
