What causes a loud whistling noise under acceleration?

Hi guys, I’ve noticed a strange high-pitched whistling noise coming from my Discovery Sport lately whenever I accelerate hard. On top of that, I spotted a few drops of fresh oil on my driveway. I crawled underneath with a torch and can see oil dripping down the back of the engine block near the exhaust manifold. Is this a major red flag?

  • The car still drives okay for now, but the whistle is definitely getting louder every day, almost like a dentist's drill. I'm really worried the seals inside are failing and it's going to suffer a major breakdown while my family is in the car.

  • Yeah, that oil leak combined with a dentist drill whistle means the internal bearings and oil seals are completely cooked. Stop driving it before it pulls all the oil out of the sump and destroys the engine. I had the exact same issue on mine and sorted it by getting an exchange Discovery Sport turbo from a UK reconditioning house. You just swap your broken unit for one of their professionally rebuilt ones. The turnaround was super quick, the price was fair, and it completely cured both the leak and the horrible noise.

  • A loud whistling noise during acceleration is often caused by an air or vacuum leak, a damaged intake hose, a worn turbocharger (if equipped), or an exhaust leak. It may also come from a loose belt or a faulty PCV valve. Since the sound appears under load, inspect the intake and exhaust systems first. Ignoring the issue could reduce performance or lead to more expensive repairs later.
