How many years would you keep doing travel assignments?

Hi everyone ;)

When I started taking travel assignments, I pictured doing this for maybe two or three years before settling into something permanent. Now I'm not so sure I need to put a deadline on it.

As long as the moves still feel exciting and the work fits my life, part of me thinks I should just keep going and see where it takes me.

  • I stopped giving myself a timeline after my first few assignments. My priorities can change, so I'd rather judge it year by year than decide now when I'm supposed to stop. The variety of facilities and locations is still a big reason I enjoy this kind of work.

I also think having plenty of options makes it easier to continue. When searching for allied health opportunities, I've found tlc allied useful for looking at travel positions in different locations and learning more about the practical side of assignments. I'll probably keep traveling until the flexibility stops being a benefit for me.

  • That's a good way to look at it. I think I created an imaginary deadline because I assumed that eventually I was supposed to choose one facility and stay there. But right now, a permanent position doesn't really offer anything I'm missing.

I can see my priorities changing later, especially if moving starts feeling exhausting instead of exciting. For now, I'd rather make the decision based on how I actually feel each year.

  • Exactly. I know travelers who've wanted stability pretty quickly and others who still enjoy taking assignments years later. Neither approach seems wrong to me.

I'd probably reconsider if I stopped enjoying new environments, wanted to put down roots somewhere, or found a permanent role that was genuinely difficult to turn down. Until then, I don't see a reason to leave a setup that's still working just because I've reached some arbitrary number of years.
