Are custom sleeved cable extensions actually safe to use?

Building my first custom PC and I really hate the look of plain black rubber power cables. I see a lot of people using braided extensions, but I'm worried about voltage drops or melting wires under heavy load. Are full replacement cables better, or are simple extensions fine?

  • Cable extensions connect to standard component connectors without modifying the power supply pinout, making them universally safe as long as proper wire gauge standards are maintained.

Extensions are totally fine for 99% of builds because they just plug into the standard ends of your original cables, so you don't have to worry about matching the specific pinout of your power supply model. The only downside is managing the extra cable length tucked away in the PSU shroud. If you ever decide to skip the extra bulk and go with direct replacement wires instead, just make sure they match your exact unit. You can glance through Seasonic’s overview on PSU Cables to get a sense of how wire gauges and pin compatibility work so you know what to look out for.
