How can I round the edges of non-square shapes?

I'm working with shapes that are not perfect squares or rectangles, and I'd like to round their edges without changing the overall shape too much. I can easily round corners on basic shapes, but I can't find a similar option for custom or irregular ones. Is there a built-in feature for this, or do I need to convert the shape before editing? Any tips or recommended workflow would be appreciated.
