Suggestions for the Next Big Update
Suggestions started going into many threads, hopefully we can gather them here for the next big update.
First off, I love the update and cant wait for the mini update that will bring back the well missed groove editor.
They really listened to people's requests and have integrated them creatively and very streamlined.
Not all suggestions made it I know, here is your chance to voice them.
1. The sample window is great, but could be greatly improved very simply with 4 letters. ADSR. an envelope here will take this app further and make wave editing more INTUAtive.
dont know if it sounds easier than is possible, but we can really spend more time here, shaping and enhancing our sounds.
2. Still in the wave editor pages: how about a loop designer page where u can set simple loop behaviors, like loop on release, and the usual.
3. An assignable LFO per pad. Maybe in the mixer page you can add an LFO page where like the XY pad, you can assign functions (pan,vol,tune,fx..)to the LFO and have some basic LFO settings such as style, and rate.
4. Automation recording of the XY pad. The XY pad is just Rocking my world right now. I love having a nice crunchy loop and set some crazy combos with the XY, setting it to full screen then, just, slip the iphone back in my pocket and rock away for a while!! Nobody knows, you are actually modulating your own beats in your pocket, with one finger! Well, Anyways.. It would make things seriously AWESOME if the XY pad had a special pattern, with diff pattern lengths that will record our finger movements, and that we can then sequence into our song.
5. I think of this more of a bug, but when you save a song with a XY pad setting, it does not save those settings and you have to set again each time you load the track. It would be great that when you save a song mutes/FX/ XY pad settings, and your loop length and loop status are saved with your file.
6. One of the coolest new features we got for Christmas was the record in feature. This is almost revolutionary!! The other day a guy on a cello sat right in front of me and my earphones have a mic. I recorded him and had him on a pad in minutes.. Its beautiful... I did find it a bit clunky and difficult to manage.. I haven't read the manual, and I think it can take a bit getting used to, but Maybe it can be improved with levels meter, and playback pad to test if its even worth saving, or just to trigger, and Dont know if I'm pushing it here , but a cropper to only save what you wanted to get, and not the rest of the junk that takes up space and memory.
Other thoughts,
personally I don't miss the piano roll, the pitch editor is perfect and robust enough for me for a pocket music machine.
People ask for another bank of sounds and it would be godly yes, but not the end of the world, since you can actually get quite far with careful editing and some tricks and creativity.
And the real question...
who here will be the first to get a beatmaker track onto vinyl!
cheers guys,
well done intua!

Hopefully the iPhone has enough RAM to run all those extra features including Note Off, Poly, and Mono touch settings for the pads just like the Akai MPC. This will definitely make it a stand out App. I would be willing to pay an additional $20 for this update <!-- s:D --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_e_biggrin.gif" alt=":D" title="Very Happy" /><!-- s:D -->
INTUA, just let us know its a possibility at least <!-- s:P --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_razz.gif" alt=":P" title="Razz" /><!-- s:P -->
Another feature I think would be useful is something similar to the choke feature on ableton live drum rack, which cuts off all the other samples in a particular choke group.
The pitch editor is good but it seems a tad unresponsive and takes a while to get to the right note.
One more suggestion - built in synth?
I can't imagine how slow it would run and how many memory issues we'd have if BM loaded up a synth at the same time as the sequencer and all! Although it would be very cool. Have you been tracking the talks about making it possible to pull in samples to Beatmaker from noise.io. The way the noise.io people talk it IS going to happen but I really haven't heard much from Intua's side about it. Pretty much any time I go to the noise.io website I see some update or mention of it from that crew.
I haven't tried noise.io yet, does it have a full song sequencer? I also noticed future audio workshop <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.futureaudioworkshop.com/">http://www.futureaudioworkshop.com/</a><!-- m --> are working on an iphone app.
No it doesn't...it's just a synth. That's why it would be a perfect pairing with Beatmaker.
This is something I hope will be fixed in the next update. It is such a pain to lose your settings each time. Also being able to have a loop setting per pad would be simply incredible!

Automation.
More voices support.
You can do this by loading files individually/per pad. In the "pads" screen select "Sample>Load" then navigate to the beatpack that has the files you want to preview. When there click the filename of the sample once to highlight it. Touch the Yellow waveform box on the right side of the screen to preview. Touch "load" when you have the file you want. Repeat steps to fill up the rest of your pads with a custom kit.
1) Ability to preview/loop a pattern from within the step sequencer, without having to insert it into an empty bar in the song sequencer and select/loop.
2) Automatic backup of ALL content when syncing iPhone.
and
i'd love to see a piano roll (like the new one in "pianist" with 2 stages) with the possibility to create & import kits for it, so there can be real instruments.
min. 88 keys and a pitch-wheel
and what about more pads? maybe 4 stages each with 16 pads. and for every stage 1 kit loading.
is it possible to lay sounds/pads on different speakers? i dont know if it is allready.
one more thing...
i dont think this is gonna be happen, but wouldnt it be great to use bm as a midi-drumpad for daw?
That's all I need. Your app is awesome!
I also find setting the loop positions a little difficult. Trying to set one end can often end moving the other. Perhaps you could tilt the itouch to help set the loop ends.

I'm surprised nobody else is having a problem with this. Am I the only one who ever tried to use the pitch editor on tuned samples? I find that hard to believe.
Here's why:
If I accidentally press a pad that's off timing or a pad that I didn't mean to hit while I'm in record then I have to go the sequencer to delete it or turn it down, or sometimes just scrap the whole pattern altogether, which I'd rather not lose my other pad beats. Why not cut that step out with an undo button, only one undo history would be needed really. Would save a lot of headache and time.
A second bank, much like how MPC/Drum pads. Both my midi controllers (Korg Padkontrol and Akai Pad) have an A/B switch, basically you can trigger a second set pad's worth of samples by a simple pad switch. You have Pad A and Pad B basically. I'd imagine for an App like this, even the sequencer could function the same way to prevent the bulk of 16 tracks
As of right now the app works excellent for laying down percussive elements on the go and actually is a bit quicker than loading up Battery and assigning samples but the sound bank limitation really means its kept (at least for me) strictly to laying down percussion as there's simply not enough banks for sampling leads and creating bass lines. It works great for exporting to my Mac Pro and just hacking up my created loops with Recycle. Its a fantastic app for $20 but the issue is more the greatness as it has potential to really become something I could make entire tracks with if I wanted to.
Transferring files can be finnicky. I've found that its more reliable to transfer via WAN than LAN. Often on LAN if I try to access a folder to download, the app will quit out. There's no rhyme or reason. I may have two folders from the same sound lib, Folder 1 will work and Folder 2 won't. Folder 1 even may have more samples in it, and the filenames are nearly the same like sample001.wav - sample100.wav and Folder 2 will contain sample101.wav - sample200.wav. If I click Folder 1 I can download its contents. If I click Folder 2, it'll quit out. Then on WAN using 3G, there's a greater chance it'll work (albeit slower). Its not a deal breaker but somewhat frustrating. I've tried using Automator to rename groups of files thinking perhaps it was the file name or the folder name but there's really no telling which Beatmaker will turn its nose to.
I imagine in a few months time if updates are steady this app will actually be butting heads with Battery. Things look very bright.
Maybe the BPM Display could be the tap instead of the tap field hidden "somewhere" in the pads submenus?!
I use BM to overdub my live gigs eg. records, mp3's, cd's, live instruments etc. and it doesn't really stay tight on the beat and also the tapping is very vague
Can u please fix these tightness bugs and give me more intuitive options for live gigs??
I would appreciate that a lot (for my $20 bucks) <!-- s;) --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_e_wink.gif" alt=";)" title="Wink" /><!-- s;) -->
PS: Big up for you Programmers!!!
To me these are more like interface fixes and tightening, I think
it wouldn't be so hard to implement these.
1. When saving files and kits, it would be a time benefit that if you are just gonna update a file and just put an_02 or 03 or _B how ever u do it..
If u can click on one of the files u already have with the same name and that name would stay on the text field so you can just add an extension to it.
Its cumbersome to have to always retype the name..
2. It would be great to have song range and loop settings save out with your song. The first thing I always have to do when I open a file is go to seq mode, and set range every time..
Just wonder why its never remembered. It would be awesome as well to keep settings for the cross hair mapping and settings. So that when you open a song u just press play and
its exactly as u last left it.
3. Does anyone here use the fade in fade out buttons in the sample editor? I have not been able to make these work. has anyone? if they don't work. these can be replaced for an ADSR for much more functionality..
The Fourtrack Apps, Fring, and most voice recordings apps currently work with the 1G iPod Touch 2.2FW and a Macally iVoiceIII or Pro.
It would also be cool to be able to import/export tracks with one of the available "Fourtrack" applications available at the App Store : ) That way, we could lay some rough vocals or live instruments over the top of a BM sequence! <!-- s:D --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_e_biggrin.gif" alt=":D" title="Very Happy" /><!-- s:D --> <!-- s:D --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_e_biggrin.gif" alt=":D" title="Very Happy" /><!-- s:D --> <!-- s:D --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_e_biggrin.gif" alt=":D" title="Very Happy" /><!-- s:D -->
I got 3 simple things that really would improve the app... i'm a 15 year veteran when it comes to using mpc's, and 3 simple things i love about them are missing.
1) cutting off other pads. this should be simple to incorporate, in the same way you can mute or reverse pads, you can choose for one pad to mute(cut off) one or more other pads.
2)ERASE... this could be in the transport, hit erase mode, hit and hold the pad(s) to erase while the pattern is playing at the moments you want to erase your note... no need for an undo function if you have this...
3)load individual samples from kits/save individual samples. ok that's 2 things, but still, quite necessary <!-- s;) --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_e_wink.gif" alt=";)" title="Wink" /><!-- s;) -->
thats all i need, this would make it perfect for me and really increase my speed!
Even if its only 1 more bank that would be Beautiful!
We could play beats and bass on one bank then chop a sample over 16 pads on bank 2!!!
And Cut off for the pads , I know how to lower the velocity to 0 to do a work around , however a function for it would be nice!
But this is something that I think would be helpful:
Kit Transfer via USB plug.
I don't always have wi-fi (especially at work) and there's times I want to share patches with co-workers and friends and can't.
