How do I control external hardware synths via BM3

So I’ve plugged in my Volca Keys and interfaced it with a usb midi cable via the camera connection kit but it’s not receiving any note info. Please help thanks.

  • Tried BM2 and it can receive Midi note info but not midi clock it appears. Any thoughts?

  • Yeah, put an empty sample in the sampler, now use that to send MIDI, mad, yes, works, yes, hahaha

  • Thanks still not really working. Will only really play one note at a time lol.

  • Anymore advise on this problem gang?

I'm releasing a thing really soon that allows you to use BM3's pads and/or keyboard to control midi destinations, without needing to have a software instrument or an empty sample loaded.

If you're impatient, controlling bank/pad midi out settings with an empty sample like 5pin said is an okay workaround.

  • To get more than 1 note at a time, change the samplers polyphony?

    REALLY need midi clock.
If BM3 could SEND midi clock to my hardware, I would be a happy camper..... :)

Sweet thanks man. I feel like an idiot for not figuring that out lol.

  • Any idea how to record notes etc from hardware because it refuses to work in both BM2 and BM3?

  • Audio notes, or midi notes?

Midi notes mate. Can't seem to get it to work. :-(

  • Well, I can't speak for BM2, but in BM3, you should be able to plug in a midi controller, or midi from a 5pin connection if you have an adapter like the iRig MIDI 2 and play the banks in BM3 with it.

You can set the midi connection option in BM3 to omni mode, where it always connects to the currently selected bank.

Can you now play the bank with your connected midi keyboard or controller?

If so, then just press record and the midi notes that you play should be recorded.
If not, then you need to work out your midi connection still.

    :)

I tried recording midi on 3 devices (Korg 05r/w, Korg Volca Keys and Roland D110). The only thing that seemed to play back something was my Roland D110 through BM2 but then that was brief. :-(

    Anyways I'll keep trying.

Am using a generic usb midi cable - one of the ones that's a fiver on Amazon. Not sure if that's making a difference but it's recognised in both BM2 and BM3.

Korg volca keys only has midi in unless you have a special modded one?

  • Are you trying to record the midi to playback the banks inside of BM3,
or are you trying to record the midi to play back your HARDWARE SYNTHS?

If you want to play and record the midi from your hardware synth,
then have BM3 play back your hardware synth, there is a lot more setup involved.

You would most likely need to make adjustments inside your synths individually, including usually turning LOCAL OFF and assigning every synth a different MIDI channel number to respond to... You would also need a midi IN and a midi OUT plugged in to every synth if you want that, etc...

  • I'll try and do a video to demonstrate it but it probably won't be for a while or at least until the weekend. I thought it would be straight forward but alas it's not. :-(

  • @DeanDaughters
Does the ,'Link to Midi', app send out midi clock sync when run alongside BM3?

  • edited January 10

MIDI Link Sync synchronises Ableton link and midiclock.
It can link to BM3 and send out midi clock. If you change tempo in BM3 then the midi clock also synchronises to the BM3 tempo changes.

  • The issue with using an app like Link to Midi imho,
is that you do not have midi START/STOP unless you switch apps back over to Midi Link Sync.
I do not switch apps during a live jam/performance.

Will keep waiting for proper midi clock sync.
Would open up a lot of possibilities for me.

Including finally being able to use BM3 as an actual proper midi sequencer for stand-alone hardware gear.

As it is now, with no Midi Clock, if you try to sequence hardware with BM3 -
the fx / modulations / lfo's etc - inside the hardware gear - do not sync up with the song tempo and it's a mess of out of sync nonsense.

  • Just gonna say it again. (but @mathieugarcia already knows we desperately need this):

+1 for Proper midi clock in and out,

and +1 for full global midi learn JUST LIKE THE MACROS, where we can ASSIGN start/stop points to ANYTHING we assign to any knob on any midi controller.

  • Oh global MIDI learn, yes please !!!

  • +1 to all the above!
